1 #Cross Docking 2 3 Excerpted from this [wikipedia article](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross-docking). 4 5 > Cross-docking is a practice in the logistics of unloading materials from an incoming 6 semi-trailer truck or railroad car and loading these materials directly into outbound 7 trucks, trailers, or rail cars, with little or no storage in between. 8 This may be done to change the type of conveyance, to sort material intended for different destinations, 9 or to combine material from different origins into transport vehicles (or containers) 10 with the same destination or similar destinations. 11 12 > Cross-dock operations were first pioneered in the US trucking industry in the 1930s[citation needed], 13 and have been in continuous use in less-than-truckload (LTL) operations ever since. 14 The US military began using cross-docking operations in the 1950s. 15 Wal-Mart began using cross-docking in the retail sector in the late 1980s. 16 17 > In the LTL trucking industry, cross-docking is done by moving cargo from one transport vehicle 18 directly onto another, with minimal or no warehousing. In retail practice, cross-docking operations 19 may utilize staging areas where inbound materials are sorted, consolidated, 20 and stored until the outbound shipment is complete and ready to ship. 21 22 See also [LTL](https://github.com/valueflows/valueflows/blob/master/use-cases/less-than-truckload-shipping.md)
